The State Collection of Egyptian Art is located on the ground floor of the Residence. It reaches back to the collections of Duke Albrecht V. and King Ludwig I. Furthermore the collection could be extended by numerous donations. The objects on exhibition cover the whole range of ancient Egyptian history. Early Christian artefacts from the delta of the Nile are to be seen as well as art from Meroe and Nubia and Assyrian monumental reliefs. The collection includes sculptures, jewellery, cult objects, papyri and textiles. It is one of a very few museums concentrating only on Egyptian art, especially on round sculptures.
In 2000 the special exhibition Das Gold von Meroe could be seen showing the
treasures found in the tomb of Queen Amanishakheto. It impressively demonstrated the different influences from ancient Egypt, Greece and Africa.
The empire of Meroe (270 B.C. - 300 A.D.) was one of the fringe cultures. The first part of this golden treasure was acquired by King
Ludwig I. in 1839. The second part could be bought by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. in 1844. This was the first time this unique
complex could be seen as a whole in Munich.
