Continuing your tour from
Marienplatz to Rindermarkt you arrive at the parish
church St. Peter. It´s the venerable first parish church
in Munich.
Even before the founding of the city, a chapel occupied the hill known as Petersbergl. The church harours masterpieces by E. Grasser, E.Q. Asam, I. Günther, Straub und F.J.Schwanthaler. Remarkeble the inimitable high altar designed by E.Q. Asam and executed by Stuber, with the noble seated figure of St. Peter by E. Grasser and the four church fathers by E.Q. Asam. Angles by F.J. Schwanthaler flank the tabernacle. Jan Polacks paintings of St. Peter - part of the late gothic high altar - now hang on the walls of the choir.
The 92 meters (301 feet) hights Renaissance tower of the church is one of the city´s traditional emblems. The Tower is nicknamed Old Peter by the baverian population. The old Peter afforts a marvellous view of Munich and of the alps, particularly during the south wind known as "Fön".
By climbing the tower of St. Peter you have the hole city at your feet!
