Altes Rathaus - The Old Town Hall

When you leave the subway station "Marienplatz" you catch sight of the old city hall . This "Altes Rathaus" between "Beck am Rathauseck" and the "Talbrucktor" gate was reconstructed in the simple Baverian Gothic style after the Second World War.

The Old Town Hall was mentioned for the first time in 1345, todays building was built during the years 1470-1480 to the plans of Jörg v. Halsbach, so called "Ganghofer", also the Master Builder of the Cathedral "Frauenkirche". It´s gothic hall was originally used for dancing. The interior furnishing include such gems as the Morris Dancers by Erasmus Grasser, a masterpiece of Late Gothic sculpture. Only replicas are on view here, the originals in "Stadtmuseum". You can buy them as wooden handmade copies around Marienplatz.

To the right you see the Talbruck gate, that connects "Marienplatz" with TAL. It was also destroyed during the Second World War and reconstucted 1972 on the basis of its appearance prior to 1474. In the tower of the Old Town Hall you find the Toy Museum a collection by Ivan Steiger. A childhood world hidden away in the busy pedestrian zone.
