Badenburg - Nymphenburg Palace

Rückfassade Badenburg mit See

In the southern half of the "Nymphenburger Park" (Nymphenburg Parc), just opposite the "Pagodenburg", Elector Max Emanuel had the two-storey bathing pavillion built by Joseph Effner in 1719 - 21. Max Emanuel was probably inspired to build the "Badenburg" by Turkish bathhouses that he had seen during the Turkish Wars. The heatable pool of the "Badenburg" was Europe's first indoor swimming-pool.

Here it was where Max Emanuel met his numerous mistresses. Originally the "Badenburg" was decorated with his "Kleine Schönheitsgalerie" (small gallery of beauties), now hanging in the northern bedroom of "Schloss Nymphenburg" (Nymphenburg Palace).

The motives of the stucco decoration by Charles Dubot in the banqueting hall (e.g. water gods, shells and musical instruments) refer to festive events which took place around the "Badenburg". The walls of the bath in the basement are covered with Dutch tiles. You can have a look into the pool from the gallery surrounding the upper part. The Chinese fashion played an important role in decorating the "Badenburg". A perfect example can be found in the former bedroom, a hand-crafted wallpaper with life-size Chinese figurines. The "Badenburg" is an unique example for combining European, Asian and Oriental cultural elements.
