You will find the most impressive iron-cast statue of
Bavaria's patron saint on the border of the
Theresienwiese where the annual agricultural trade fair
as well as the world-famous
Oktoberfest take place
each year in September. As a matter of fact, the statue
represents a Germanic amazon, an allegoric impersonation
of Bavaria's (the country's) power and strength.
At least at close viewpoint "Bavaria" controls
the nearby surroundings by its conspicuous location and
size. The sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler designed this
monumental statue and was built from 1844 till 1850 at
the renowned foundry of J.B. Stiglmair, the result being
a brilliant achievement in iron casting.
Feel free to explore the inside of the monument, if you
do not shy away from climbing 66 steps that lead from the
hollow of the knee up to the top, i.e. the Bavaria's
crown! You will appreciate both the wonderful scenic view
over Munich at the top and the evidence of superior iron
casting craftmanship during the ascent.
If you are sightseeing by
public transport, i.e. S- or U-Bahn, then take the subway
(U-Bahn) U4 or U5 to "Messegelände". You can
not miss the statue, when you leave this subway station.
However, if you should decide to get off the subway at
"Theresienwiese", the monument is within
10-minutes walking distance.
