Dreifaltigkeitskirche (Trinity Church) - Pacellistr. 12

Fassade Kirche
Frontside of the church

During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 14) the daughter of a Munich valet, Anna Maria Lindmayr, had a vision: only if the nobility and citizens vow to build a church, Munich would be preserved from fire and destruction by the Austrian army. The foundation-stone of the church was laid in 1711, designed by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi. His combination of the square central area and the longer north arm containing the choir was of profound influence on Bavarian Rococo church-architecture.

Aussenansicht
Fresco with self-portrait
The facade was the first convex church facade in Bavaria based on Italian models. After Viscardi's death the architects Zuccalli and Ettenhofer completed the church. The ceiling fresco by Cosmas Damian Asam with a self-portrait of the artist was his first work in Munich and at the same time the earliest example of baroque ceiling painting in the city. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche (Trinity Church) is the only church which has not been destroyed during World War II.
