Since 1789 Munich owns his English garden - an oasis in the heart of the city. Munich has to owe the English garden to an American: Benjamin Thompson - the later imperial count of Rumford - was a Bavarian minister of war and a socially reformer. What a combination! Originally the northern marshy land of the Isar was intended as a military garden; invested by the gardener Sckell. However, the thouht of a national park was soon realised. Agricultural use and education was given to the people in the park. Thus model farms, tree schools, a sheepfarm and an agriculture school were founded. In 1989 the English garden celebrated his 200-year-old existence with a spectacular cultural program. The English garden has retained its natural beauty and romantic wildness. It is a garden for the citizens. On the countless routes through the park one meets all kind of rest-searching: Parents playing with their children, dog owners throwing little floor in the ice river, sun worshipper and students from the nearby university reading and philosophising. The friends of the tea culture can meet in the Japanese teahouse (buit in 1972 by the Japanese architect Mitsuo Nomara). Here a Japanese tea master brings forward the original Japanese tea ceremony. One of the famous beer gardens of Munich is located in the English Garden: the Chinese tower, built during the years 1789/1790. And in winter you can discover a small Christmas fair with art craft, Santa Claus and cradle under the pagoda roofs of the Chinese tower. From the Monopterus - a Greek style built round temple - you have a picturesque look at the Munich skyline. The lake "Kleinhesselhoher See" - the heart of the park - offers with its three islands, the sea house (Seehaus) and the pedal boat rental company the ideal place for relaxing. Just before the Effnerbrücke an amphitheatre was established in 1984/85. At the end at the northern end of the park there is the Aumeister with its extensive beer garden. |
