Cathedral to our lady - Frauenkirche at Frauenplatz 1

The Cathedral to our lady is still towering above most modern buildings in the city and so it's still dominating Munich's skyline. The towers of the church could be seen at a great distance and they are typical landmarks of Munich. Munich has got many sights, but the round spires of Women's cathedral – also known as Welsh bonnets – have got a broadcasting with an almost magic attraction. In the city-center this gothic building booms about 99 meters into the height.

Cathedral's history is very old. Even in the 12th century, still before the city was built, there was a little chapel at this place. In 1468 the actual foundations were laid by the architect Jörg von Halsbach (named Ganghofer). In 1488 the completion of the Cathedral tempted many pilgrims to Munich. The green gleaming cathedral bonnets – modeled on Italian renaissance domes – had been added in1524. In color the green domes are harmonizing with the red klinkerbuilding. The cathedral is still overwhelming by its dimensions (108 m long – 38 m wide). It was planned for an assembly of about 20.000 people. But when you visited it in the years from 1990 to 1992 you were surly disappointed by the cold objectivity - caused by the glaring light. Many of the historic treasures had been laid out and the gothic mystic of a holy place like these couldn't be felt.

Surly this was caused by the reconstruction, too. In 1993 the reconstruction was finished and many treasures could be seen at their place in the cathedral. Worth mentioning the series of apostle and Prophet sculptures by Erasmus Grasser, the altarpieces by Jan Pollack and the painting of "the assumption of virgin Mary" by Peter Candid. The glass windows of the choral – built between the 14th and 16th century - got over the war time. One of the glass windows shows the "Münchner Kindl". Also impressive are the 12 wooden relieves by Ignatz Günther, that shaped the main portal, too. The cathedral inserts the graves of the Wittelsbacher dynasty.
