The world-famous "Glockenspiel" (carillion) in the tower of the New Town Hall shows
two scenes of Munich history. Every day at 11 a.m., noon and additionally in summer (May - October) at 5 p.m. you can enjoy the 43 bells
playing folk tunes and watch the mechanical couloured life-size figures. The upper part shows a tournament on the occasion of
the wedding of Duke Wilhelm V. and Renata of Lorraine in 1568, which the Bavarian knight wins.
The lower part commemorates
the "Schäfflertanz" (Cooper's Dance). After the plague in the Middle Ages the coopers went on the streets and danced
in order to bring back joy into people's lifes. Even today the coopers dance every 7 years during the carnival season
(next dance in 2005). At 9 p.m. there appear in the oriels on the seventh tier a night-watchman blowing his horn (left)
and an angel of peace (right) putting the "Münchner Kindl" to bed (child which appears in a habit on the heraldic shield of the city of Munich).
