The Karlstor (accessible by MVV) represents the entrance to the Historic City Centre from the Stachus which makes it the ideal starting point for your shopping spree down Neuhauser and Kaufinger Straße towards the Marienplatz. It used to be the western gate of the medieval fortifications built under King Ludwig the Bavarian.
The Karlstor takes its official name from the Elector Karl Theodor, who had the Karlsplatz (Karl's Square) laid out. He commissioned Rumford to alter the gate, who preserved the medieval side gates.
The Karlstor rises up beyond the Karlsplatz, which is better known as the Stachus, named after the innkeeper Eustachius Föderl.
