Until 1802 the first detached opera house of Germany was located at the Salvatorplatz. It was erected in the mid 17th century
under Electress Henriette Adelaide and showed baroque Italian operas and French comedies for the court.
The first performance of Mozart's opera "Gärtnerin aus Liebe" took place there. At the end of 19th century the opera house
was replaced by a late classical school building designed by Löwel. In 1997 the school was moved to another place and the
building was
extended to the "House of Literature" by a third and fourth floor in a steel-glass construction.
After New York Munich is the second second largest book publishing house-city in the world.
The "House of Literature" was opened in 1997 and is a mutual project of the city of Munich and the media industry.
Meanwhile it has developed into a centre of public events regarding books and media. Besides the "Café Ducatz" on
the ground floor the "House of Literature" contains different exhibition rooms and multipurpose rooms where exhibitions
and lectures take place on a regular basis.
