Friedrich von Gärtner was commissioned by King Ludwig I. to build the Ludwigskirche in a Romantic Byzantine style in 1829 - 44. The three-naved basilica corresponds to the Neo-Classical style of the Ludwigstraße. On both sides the catholic university church is flanked by open arcades and square houses. At that time Friedrich von Gärtner lived in the house on the right hand side. Under the arcades there are bronze plates to commemorate the two most important architectures of Classicism in Munich: Leo von Klenze and Friedrich von Gärtner. The two towers with Neo-Gothic windows enclose the broad facade with Byzantine ornaments.
Figures of Christ with the four apostels made by Ludwig von Schwanthaler are placed in the round niches of the facade.
The interior of the church is dominated by an enormous fresco, "Last Judgment" a work by the painter Peter Cornelius. After Michelangelo's fresco with the same name in the Sistine Chapel in Rome it is one of the world's largest mural painting. Peter Cornelius was one of the leading artists in the Romantic period and a member of the "Nazarene group" who studied and worked in Rome.
