Behind the greenhouses of the "Nymphenburger Park" the "Magdalenenklause" was erected as a place of prayer and meditation for the aging Elector Max Emanuel. The architect was Joseph Effner 1725/26, but the Elector died before it was completed. The exterior of this eremitage is designed like a ruin with Romanesque, Gothic and Moorish architectural details, according to the fashion of that period. The rectangular, single-storey building consists of a chapel and four cell-like rooms. The chapel is decorated with artificial corals and shells in the form of a grotto. Crucifix and candlesticks are made of carved narwhal tusk. The dome of the chapel is covered with coloured stones set like a mosaic and the ceiling paintings of Nikolaus Gottfried Stuber are dedicated to the repentant Mary Magdalene. The four rooms are panelled in simple stained oak. The original heating system can still be seen in form of a tiled stove which heats three rooms at once.
