Duke Wilhelm IV. took the Jesuits to Munich in 16. Century.
For the construction of the Jesuit's cloister 34 town houses had to be torn off.
The Jesuits then were supported by Duke Wilhelm V. The constuction started in 1583.
But 7 years later the tower standing to Ettstrasse collapsed, and Wilhelm V. looked at this as a token of the
archangel Michael to build the church even greater. Based on the old church of the Jesuits
"Il Gesu" in Rome this second section was conducted by the architect Friedrich Sustris.
With a size of 20 meters the vault of the church is the biggest beyond the Alps.
Between both red marble main entrances the figure of the archangel Michael fights against Satan as an embodiment of the heresy and the Protestantism.
The bronze group comes from Hubert Gerhard (1588).
After the Säkularisation there have been different institutions in the cloister,
as for example the court library, the Bavarian academy of the sciences and from 1826 - 1840 the university.
Today in this building there are the statistical regional authorities (Statistisches Landesamt) and the textile house Hettlage.
A small part of the building is still hold by the Jesuits for social seminars.
In the prince's crypt are the tombs of Duke Wilhem V. and King Ludwig II.
