Still during the construction time of the old picture gallery (Alte Pinakothek)
king Ludwig I. caught the plan to
let build a second museum for his private collection. Therefore a new gallery construction between 1846 - 1853, planned by August von Voit
was constructed to the north of the old picture gallery. But this building had to be torn off,
as a result of heavy war damages. The new complex of buildings from granite, glass and concrete
was established from Alexander von Branca in 1975 - 1981 in the post modern style.
The collection encloses a total of about 4,500 paintings and about 300 plastics of the 18. Century (e.g., Goya) about the romanticism
(e.g., Caspar David Friedrich "gigantic mountainous region"), the realism,
the history painting up to the
beginning of 20. Century with the French impressionists
(e.g., " Breakfast in the studio " from Manet) as well as Jugendstil and Sezessionismus.
After the Berlin national gallery the new picture gallery "Neue Pinakothek" is the most extensive German
collection with works of 19. Century. In the ground floor changing exhibits take place.
The museum-educational centre (Museumspädagogisches Zentrum MPZ) in the basement
tries to give a clearly and explainingunderstanding to children and youngsters of the exhibit pieces.
