The city administration of Munich suffered from persistent shortage of space.
Therefore, in the middle of 19. Century, Munich decided to build a new town hall.
The new town hall was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1867 - 1909, instead of originally planned 24 town houses
at this location
There were 3 construction phases, all directed by Georg Hauberrisser.
The brick building is the oldest part of the building between Dienerstrasse and
Marienplatz.
Later the extension tract at the back side of the building was competed.
The new building with the 85-m-high town hall tower was built with limestone and tuff,
decorated with statues of all nobles of the famous "Welfen" and "Wittelsbacher".
In the seam between annexe and new building there is the rider's statue of the Prinzregent Luitpold.
In the town hall tower everyday (except Good Friday) the fifth-biggest carillon (43 bells) in Europe can be seen.
From the town hall platform of the town hall tower there is a extraordinary panorama view.
The splendour court (Prunkhof) with the stair tower, the "stair of the ages" is also worth seeing.
The new town hall is a seat of 3 mayors of Munich as well as 80 town councils.
