This gigantic baroque arrangement was the summer residence of the dynasty of "Wittelsbacher". Initially built as "villa suburbana" by elector Ferdinand Maria as a gift for his wife Henriette Adelaide to the birth of the long desired successor to the throne Max Emanuel. After plans of Agostino Barelli and Enrico Zuccalli the middle tract was established between 1664 and 1675 in the style of an Italian villa. Elector Max Emanuel extended the arrangement and added the side wings, the gallery constructions and two pavilions, directd by his architects Antonio Viscardi and Joseph Effner. Also the small garden castles (Pagodenburg, Badenburg) as well as the Magdalenenklause originated in this age. His son, elector Karl Albrecht, the later emperor Karl VII., extended the castle by the circular flower bed constructions and gave the wonderful rococo castle, Amalienburg, to his wife Maria Amalie.
Worth seeing inside of the palace is the stone hall (Steinerne Saal) with a colour-splendid
cover fresco of Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The beauty gallery of King Ludwig I. shows attractive ladies from
the bourgeoisie and nobility and the best known portrait Lola Montez
,
the "Spanish" dancer. Their affair with the king was one of the reasons for his later resigning.
In the neighbouring room the "fairy tale king (Märchenkönig) Ludwig II. was born 25th August, 1845.
The Marstallmuseum is located in the south wing of the palacee, with the fantastic splendour carriages of the Bavarian electors and kings.
Also in the south wing there is the porcelain collection of the brothers Bäuml, which shows artworks of the
"Prozellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg" founded in 1761.
The museum "Mensch und Natur (man and nature)" is accommodated in the northern pavilion.
You should not forget to take a small refreshment to yourselves in the castle café from palm house (castle park)!
