Every year the biggest public festival of the world takes place on the Theresienwiese at the end of September / beginning of October. About 6 Milllion visitors from all over the world come on the "Wies'n" to test the different kinds of beer of the Munich breweries.
Beside the comfortable beer tents there are show booths, the popular swings and carousels, modern rides as well as rapid looping roller coasters, barbecue (Ochsen- and Hendlbratereien), fish specialities (Steckerlfische) as well as a big choice of sweets (burnt almonds, glazed apples) ....
The first Oktoberfest was celebrated in 1810 on the occasion of the wedding of the later king Ludwig I.
with the princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
At that time the only attraction was a horse
race and free beer for the Munich citizens. Because of the success of the festival, the Oktoberfest will be celebrated
every year since then.
The Oktoberfest starts with a procession of the brewes in traditional costumes (Trachtenumzug)to the Theresienwiese. The October party with the national costume move of the firm landlords and breweries is opened. Afterwards the mayor of Munich taps the first beer barrel. It is an old tradition that the Bavarian Prime Minister gets the first litres of beer.
