Originally the Olympic Stadium in the Olympic Park was built for the athletic competitions during the XX. Summer Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. After the games it became the stadium where the most soccer games took place all over Germany. During the Federal League soccer games the two Munich teams FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München played alternately on the 105 x 68 m big playground. They could even play in winter with ice and snow because the ground can be heated. In summer during off-season the stadium was used for open air concerts. Famous bands as e.g. Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson have already given a concert in this stadium.
So far only the western part of the stadium with 70.000 seats is covered by the tented roof. The
different plans to increase the number of seats, to roof up the whole stadium and to remove the 400 m long running track with four
lines were stopped in 2001, when the two Munich soccer teams started with the construction of the Allianz Arena. Since 2005
the soccer games take place in the north of Munich in Fröttmaning.
