As the last, really classicistic building in Munich Leo von Klenze established in 1846 - 1862 this temple entrance on the Königsplatz according to the model of the Propyläen on the Acropolis. Between two mighty towers there is a Doric gable front with 6 colunms. Ludwig von Schwanthaler has sketched the gable plastics. They show a glorification of the Greek fight for independence.
The Propyläen were conceived as a monument for the Bavarian army,
for the Greek struggle for freedom and for King Otto of Greece, who was a "Wittelsbacher".
The building also counts as a sign of friendship between Greece and Bavaria. Even the flags of both
lands have the same colours (white and blue). On the walls of the main way through the building
the names of the Greek freedom-fighters are engraved. Since 1928 the middle way through the building
is closed for the traffic. The roadways were moved at the side.
