The first Bavarian university was founded by Duke Ludwig the Rich in Ingolstadt in 1472. Relocated in Landshut by Elector Max IV. Joseph in 1800, King Ludwig I. brought the university to Munich in 1826. At first it was housed in the former college of the Jesuits next to the Michaelskirche. In 1835 - 40 Friedrich von Gärtner built the forum at the Ludwigstraße with the two Roman fountains in the middle of the Geschwister-Scholl-Platzes and Professor-Huber-Platzes.
The squares were named after the founders of the resistance group "Weiße Rose (The White Rose)" who studied at this univesity and fought against the Nazi regime. Stone leaflets put on the ground in front of the fountain at the Geschwister-Scholl-Platz commemorate Hans and Sophie Scholl distributing them in the interior court of the university in 1943. One day the janitor saw the two of them
and betrayed them to the Nazis who executed the members of the resistance group. The memorial site with exhibition and library in the interior court of the university give detailled information about the resistance group.
Originally the university was laid out for 1.500 students. But at the beginning of the 20th c. an extension building by German Bestelmeyer at the Amalienstraße was necessary. The patio reminding of Roman thermal architecture with vaulting arms conncect the new and old tract.
Today about 50.000 students study at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University but the rooms of all the faculties are spread all over the city.
