Viktualienmarkt

Blick auf Viktualienmarkt vom Alten Peter

In the middle of 19. Century the place Schrannen (former name of Marienplatz) was no longer sufficient for market trade, it was moved to the current location now named Viktualienmarkt (Viktualien is an old german word for food), close to the parish church St. Peter in the centre of the city. Fruit, vegetables, flowers, milk products, eggs, fowl, meat, fish and game of very good quality, you will find everything here. The offer encloses not only local products, but also Mediterran, Asian and Latin-American products. Maibaum mit Ständen The white-blue maypole in the middle of the place was donated by 6 big breweries in Munich which may pour out her beer alternately in the comfortable beer garden. Brunnenfigur Karl Valentin Six fountain monuments of famous Munich national actors and national singers are distributed about the whole Viktualienmarkt. The popular national actors Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt as well as the national singers Weiss Ferdl, Elise Aulinger, Roider Jakl and Ida Schumacher are to be seen here. Partial the fountains are still decorated by the inhabitants of Munich with flowers. Every year in the Shrove Tuesday the legendary dance of the market women takes place on the Viktualienmarkt.
